What To Do When You Are Feeling Overwhelmed

Hi everyone, my names Olivia from olivialucieblake.com! I am a lifestyle blogger that speaks on a wide range of topics from Mental health, self-confidence and blogging tips. I’m so excited to be doing this post with Shelly. Shelly has been such a great support system for me and my blog. I really love her content and love how open and honest she is. We both mutually decided to write on the feelings of being stressed or overwhelmed. I think a lot of people are feeling this way and have been for most of this year for obvious reasons. So, what better time to give the world some advice. Please once you have read my post, head over to my blog and read Shelly’s post on how to “De-stress Your Stress“.

TAKE A BREAK

I think this point is probably the most obvious but the hardest to achieve. It’s so easy for me to sit here and say that you need to take a break, but I don’t know your situation. I think we all have different ideas in our minds of what a break is. To me a break is time off from work but to others it could be a 20-minute bath. What I’m trying to say is, do the thing you do when you are trying to rest and relax. When we start to feel overwhelmed its usually because of a build-up of stress and a never-ending to-do list. Taking time away from this can have such a benefit on how you’re feeling, just try it.

RE-EVALUATE

Re-think what It is that’s making you feel the way you’re feeling. Is it something you can change?
If the answer is yes – Change it! What are you waiting for?
If the answer is no – What techniques can you practice to help deal with the situation better? Do you need to re-evaluate how you are doing things?

GET THINGS OFF YOUR CHEST

It’s so important to have a supportive network of people around you, especially when you’re feeling stressed or overwhelmed. Being able to offload and speak to someone you trust can really make such a difference in your life. Holding things in isn’t healthy and just tends to make things worse. Speak with someone and let them know how you’re feeling. Maybe they can offer some great advice on your situation and help you to re-think the way you’re doing things.

SAY NO

I wrote a post recently about saying no to people instead of saying yes. Sometimes the reason why we are so overloaded and overwhelmed is because we agree to take on too much than we can handle. It’s not healthy or fair on you if you say yes all the time. Say no when you know you really can’t do something. I know it can be hard to do this, but you need to consider your own happiness and wellbeing if you take too much on.

Thank you Shelly for this great idea to collaborate on this important subject. I hope the points I have written can be of help to you if you’re feeling overwhelmed at the moment. Please don’t forget to check out Shelly’s post on my blog! See you over there!

  2. Excellent tips. Love how simple they are, but also you are right, they are hard to do sometimes. I suppose the trick is to start small, like with taking a break, having a cup of tea is easier to achieve than going on a holiday, and both works!

Exactly! I’m that person who just keeps going until I either need medication or an extended break, so I’ll be starting small too. I needed this reminder 😊

  3. I love how simple and effective these tips are! Personally, re-evaluating has helped me so much in putting things into perspective. Prioritising is a great help too. Amazing write!

Right?! It’s so simple but sometimes when under pressure we just forget the most basic things. Thanks so much for sharing your ‘introverted thoughts’ 😉 there’s more of these tips and tricks over at Olivia’s blog!

  4. This is a brilliant blog, and I like how this is written in such a way that it is clear that there is no one size fits all solution! For example, I agree how taking a break is so important but how you do it is up to you. I also like the point about saying no! Saying no is actually really important but not everyone realises this 🙂

Thanks for the comment Niraj! We all have a thing or two to learn especially during this lockdown period, but the most important thing is to find solutions. Olivia has lot’s of great advice on how to find those solutions. 😀

Saying no is so important. I find women have a much harder time with that than men for some reason. It has taken me many years to learn to say no and I’m still not very good at it!

That’s an interesting view… I didn’t realise it but you are right, women do struggle more than men to say no! You aren’t the only one for sure.

  6. Great tips Olivia! I know I struggle to take a break when I’m stressed. I always tell myself “I just need 5 more minutes to get this done.” But then I keep working or I move on to the next task without taking a break and end up feeling more stressed 🤯

Love Olivia’s blog so I’m so happy to see this post! I think saying no is such a big one- you need to make your boundaries clear because otherwise you’ll be trying to please everyone and that’s going to make you even more overwhelmed.

My idea of a break is to go away for a few days just to escape, find myself and forget that I am a mother.
